Benjamin Wiebe

My name is Benjamin Wiebe and I came to Paraguay from the United States with a Mennonite service organization. I am staying with a Paraguayan host family and working here at Alto Refugio for ten months. While I did not know for sure that I was going to be working at Alto Refugio when I came, I was very excited at the prospect of working at this place which I had heard great things about and which was started by relatives (David and Judy Schmidt). After having worked here for a month, I am coming to learn how wonderful this ministry is for the HIV/AIDS community in Paraguay. Thus far, I have worked in Dulce Refugio, the kitchen, cleaning, and at Alto Refugio’s hotel. I have also witnessed the ministries done during devotionals, at the self support group, and at the hospital. I have been really impressed by how Alto Refugio works to address the peoples’ every need – from food and childcare to fellowship and spiritual direction. I can constantly see the positive impacts that the wonderful staff and this ministry have in the lives of the patients and children I interact with every day. This place truly has the power to transform many lives afflicted with the awful disease of HIV/AIDS.
